Well, this was an unusual Mom's Day for us here in southern Illinois! We had what is being called an 'inland hurricane' hit us on Friday and knocked out all power to 70000 people, us included. For mother's day I talked my husband into taking me down to Paducah, KY for the night so that we could shower and eat something not grilled, as well as check on the internet. Our power was regained finally on Tuesday around 9 pm and we were pleased to get it back! The great news is that there was only 1 death from the storms and all of our family, as well as our house, did not sustain any major damage. What a year!

I think we are approaching that time in life when the phone company commercials apply to us. I'm referring to the one where the woman answers the phone and hears, "Hello Mom? It's your son..." and then promptly faints. The slogan is, "It's Mother's Day. Don't forget to call her." My two still at home spent Saturday night at friends' homes, but came home for breakfast together. I made the breakfast. My daughter gave me a handmade card and chocolate; my son stopped at the grocery for a rosebud. My husband gave the annual orchid corsage to wear to church. My daughter who is away at college must have seen that phone company commercial because I got the call, though I wasn't shocked enough to faint. The great thing is that FATHER'S DAY comes after Mother's Day, so if they forget to be "saintly" for our day, we can return the favor. I'm thinking super ugly polyester necktie...are you with me here?

My awesome daughter drove home 3 hours from college for the weekend (even though she's not quite done with finals!) to honor me for Mother's Day! As if her presence weren't enough, she had ordered and presented me with a pair of 'Tom's' shoes. For every pair of shoes ordered, the Tom's company will make and provide a free pair of shoes for someone in the world who doesn't have any shoes. What great social awareness my kid has!!
