Hip and Cool Cousins

You may or may not remember that my sister and I are both dysfunctional and hip and cool.

What I haven’t revealed until now is this…

My cousin Sally and her family were very hip and cool too.

Olan Mills and plaid - it’s a winning combination.

Side note: Relax Sally, as you continue to read on, there are no current pictures in this post. The old ones provided plenty of material.

It is nice to have good role models so your family can be hip and cool as well.

Oh look, Olan Mills and plaid again but we were even more hip and cool as we enjoyed the beautiful fall trees.

After my family moved from Indiana when I was in the 3rd grade, Sally and I have never lived close to each other. Usually many states separate us.

She’s found her way back to Indiana with her family just miles from
our Grandad’s farm.

Whether it’s been months or a year, we always just pick up where we left off. Time and distance doesn’t get in the way of our friendship.

I don’t think there has ever been a time we’ve been together that we haven’t laughed until we cried. Even at Grandad’s funeral. Which he would have appreciated so please don’t think we were being disrespectful…

Our moms are sisters.

We were in each other’s weddings.

Oh yeah, I wore that dress a lot after the wedding. And wore my hair that way all through high school. Thank you Farrah.

Her husband Pat was Phil’s best man and I let her pick out her own dress for my “big wedding in the living room.”

Please excuse that inside family joke that sister Julie Julia should get.

We are both married to saints whose first names start with “P”

The saint part is what our families think. Whatever. We don’t necessarily agree.

Side note: I seriously just realized we are both S & P couples. I’m sure it means nothing but I was amused as I typed.

We both have four children.

Our husbands are best friends. (a post for another day)

PAHandPat1993

It’s scary how close they are - PhilBillPaul and Pat have sooooo much in common.

Mostly me and Sally.

We both have lots and lots of issues.

Look how hip and cool Sally and I were the summer after the car crash.

meandSal1987

It was 1988 and I think I weighed about 88 pounds and Sally must have been creeping up to triple digits.

Nice suspenders, Sal. I think it was the only time I ever wore horizontal stripes and hoped they made me look bigger.

This month Sally celebrates 30 years of marriage which is a milestone in my book!

But it really makes me feel old.

Then I remember this and remember I will always be younger than both of them.

It’s nice when you have a cousin that gets you.

She’s the cousin I can and have called in the middle of the night.

She’s the cousin who understands all my issues.

She’s the cousin who has a son serving in Iraq and her parents living in an apartment above her garage.

She’s the cousin who is always in my prayers.

Having a blog has its advantages. Isn’t this better than a boring (and late) anniversary card?

Happy Anniversary Sally. (and Pat.)

And thanks for being such a great cousin and more importantly, a great friend.

Much love,

Kudos to anyone that makes it to 30 years in today’s turbulent times. And, thanks for posting the pictures! I thought my green and gold Holly Hobby dress with my Dorothy Hamil haircut was bad but your plaid explosions have made me feel so much better! I appreciate the writing as always!

Tammy » Scan the picture and send it to me - maybe I can start a hip and cool style feature and you will definitely be featured first!! ;)

Happy Anniversary, Sally! I love the pictures of everyone and even though Sherra didn’t wear the bridesmaid dress much after your wedding, I DID!! We simply cut it off with a pair of scissors in our dorm room in college and I had a snazzy ‘brand new’ short red dress to wear to our sorority formal! Thanks!! Maybe she’ll post that picture, too….LOL!

Ann » Oh let me hunt down that picture. Sally should be impressed we were creative. And hey, thanks for mentioning college AND sorority in ONE comment!!

Sherra, where to start? First, thanks for posting that family picture (oh so many stories to tell about that fun adventure, including one who was somewhat drunk!) Thank you for giving Sally her just due. She continues to amaze me on a daily basis and I am so proud of her. She needs all the prayers you can send her way. Then, as far as your two husbands (best friends indeed), the truth is everyone in the families think they are the best because, really now, they “put up” with the two of you! (You know it’s TRUE). They are both great guys if I say so myself. Just thought you might want to know, Sally hosted an 80th birthday bash (OK, older people don’t really “bash” that much, mostly just sit and stay & stay & stay, LOL) for our Mom. It was a great time and I am sure all the brothers and sisters had a great time just visiting. It is amazing just being around them all, what a blessing that they are all still with us and seem to really enjoy each other’s company. (Can you imagine that happening with your brothers and sisters? Really LOL) Anyway, I love and admire Sally, she is a great mother, sister, daughter, home-schooler, etc. Maybe in the future I’ll just call myself Sally’s Sister. Cousin Dee (the best dressed in the pic)

Cousin Dee » Phew, I was getting paranoid that you all weren’t laughing at the bad family pics even though I did! Enough about the husband saints though. We just choose not to share the really BAD things about them. ;)

Today's Deep Thought

  • Sometimes when I feel like killing someone, I do a little trick to calm myself down. I'll go over to the person's house and ring the doorbell. When the person comes to the door, I'm gone, but you know what I've left on the porch? A jack-o-lantern with a knife stuck in the side of its head with a note that says "you." after that I usually feel a lot better, and no harm done.
